Aisha Iqbal (Class 9, 2024-25)
The first thing I learned as an ICSE student was the art of juggling. We need to uphold the rhythm of juggling textbooks, sports, hobbies and classes all while taking time out for ourselves and friends. It is an exhausting cycle, but one that teaches us effective time management skills and the art of striking a balance between extracurriculars and academics.
ICSE schools are reputable for their rigorous academics and wide range of subjects, but they also excel in inclusivity regarding extracurricular activities. The curriculum allows us to choose from various fields, including commerce and science, along with diverse subject groups, providing flexibility for participation in literary activities and sports.
Balancing academics and extracurriculars is vital for our overall development and enhancing our skill set for college applications. This blog will provide first-hand tips and tricks for maintaining a consistent balance between the two.
The ICSE curriculum emphasizes an all-rounded education, including science, commerce, and English, to develop proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking. In addition to standard subjects, ICSE includes value education and arts, encouraging
creativity and innovative thinking through various literary activities. A well rounded person is aware of the basic foundation of our world, which is rooted in science and the history of humans. Along with an understanding of the power of one’s words and effective communication. Add to such a person the innate curiosity of their surroundings, a love for creativity and learning and the result will be a socially, culturally aware individual capable of reasoning and making a change in the world. All of this is implemented and integrated into the ICSE education process, moulding us into well-rounded citizens.
All this being said, keeping up with the ICSE curriculum can get tedious. If you’re getting good grades, your extracurriculars are suffering and vice versa. It is like an intricate equation meant for us to balance. An art I will write more about, after establishing what extracurriculars bring to the table for us students. Extracurriculars are activities pursued alongside regular studies, ranging from artistic and intellectual pursuits to volunteering and community service. They provide hands-on experience and can lead to recognition by colleges and government bodies. Benefits include gaining experience, demonstrating initiative, and developing gratitude and teamwork skills.
These sort of activities help us understand and implement classroom learning in real life as well and make us push the limits of what we have been taught to learn new things.
In addition to this, we also learn the importance of teamwork and working with other people to come up with innovative ideas for crises. Volunteer work, especially, helps rekindle or ignite a spark of passion to help our country’s underprivileged citizens and make a change in the society.
All these experiences help students understand the importance of understanding their society. Extracurriculars urge students to take new initiatives, altogether driving them towards change and personal development through social and cultural awareness. A few common extracurricular activities in ICSE schools are lit activities such as air crash, mono-acting, debate, quiz, elocution and more.
Striking a balance between academics and extracurriculars is another very crucial factor that directly affects students’ mental health. Though it may seem difficult it is necessary for our own well being. Engaging in both areas provides a holistic education that equips
students with various skills and experiences that are essential for success in school and beyond.
First things first, balancing these two things teaches us the skill of effective time management. This skill is one that lasts us a lifetime, whether it be during an onslaught of work at a future workplace or simply to take time out for ourselves, this skill pushes us to meet deadlines while also teaching us the importance of not leaving things for the last minute. Along with this comes increased productivity, prioritization skills, scheduling and planning skills.
Balancing these factors has enabled me to achieve success in both extracurricular and academic aspects. I have been able to compete and win in many writing and literary competitions across India, whilst keeping my grades intact. This effective balance has helped me achieve many new opportunities inside and outside of school while improving my art in the process. The success stories of students by achieving this balance are plenty. Whether it be an entry into your dream college or simply reduced stress achieving a balance between academics and extracurriculars is definitely fruitful.
To balance academics and extracurriculars effectively, choose 3-4 activities that align with your skill set and focus on quality over quantity. Concentrating on a few extracurriculars allows more room for academics. Retaining knowledge can be achieved by actively listening in class and taking notes. Find a study routine that works for you; for example, study for 30 minutes to 1 hour, then take a break with extracurricular activities like writing or internship work.
Prioritizing tasks is very important. I always put math’s and physics above everything else, since they are my priorities. In the same way, you need to priorities your academics and extracurriculars based on impending deadlines, exams, test performances etc. Communication is essential for balancing academics and extracurriculars. Keeping your parents informed about your goals and extracurricular interests provides invaluable support and encouragement. Similarly, communicating with teachers about your passions
can lead to better opportunities and guidance.
So, how do you choose these three major extracurriculars?
If you have specific interests in subjects you can choose extracurriculars related to those.
Suppose you enjoy math’s, you can participate in mental math’s competitions and chess clubs. If you are still confused, you can always choose to go into community service and volunteer work, which will give you equal credit.
ICSE schools promote balanced education by providing guidance, mentorship, and a supportive environment for extracurricular activities. They emphasize effective time management through diverse programs like art courses, physical education, and clubs. The curriculum’s inclusivity underscores the importance of balancing academics and extracurriculars, supported by parents, teachers, and the school. However, it’s crucial to understand that each student is different. So, schedules should be tailored to individual
capacities and limits.
I invite readers to share any comments, tips and experiences of their own on the subject.
