Spain-based LaLiga (Liga de Futbol Profesional), known for comprising of 42 teams including Real Madrid and Barcelona, grants its scholarships to four Indian students and one from our very own Bethany.
Hailing from Mumbai and Bengaluru, Rian Katoch, Asik Shaikh, Ishan Murali and Vidwath Shetty, will train with LaLiga’s first division club, CD Leganes, from May 26 to June 5, this year. The visit will give them an opportunity to train in various technical as well as non-technical aspects of the sport through workshops with club officials and Spain’s best young players.
The students have been selected through a scouting process in which 32 players are shortlisted from LaLiga Football Schools. They’ve been assessed on various factors including technical skill, exemplary behaviour, attitude and demonstrated history of exceptional performance in respective football schools.
“These four students showcased exemplary technical skills and sporting values throughout their time at LaLiga Football Schools. We have always believed that India has strong potential to become a global footballing superpower and with this programme, young Indians will take their country one step closer to achieving the status. During their time with CD Leganes, the students will get a chance to train with the best coaches and youth of Spain which will surely have a strong impact on them.” Managing Director of LaLiga India, Jose Antonio Cachaza, said in a release.
The scholarship has been launched in association with the Embassy of Spain in India and India On Track.

A couple of days ago, when my engineering tests were going on, I was revising at home, a little nervous and unsure of my preparation for the test.
My eyes fell on the hard bound ‘The Bethany High Story’ book placed on the coffee table and although I had gone through it a million times before, I still felt the need to pick it up and turn the pages, and with every page that I turned, I felt a sense of calm. It was almost like someone had spoken to me and calmed me down. I went back to my revision but with a more confident and secure feeling.
That’s the effect that Bethany still has on me!
I remember when I first joined Bethany in Pre – Nursery, I was so shy and timid, not able to let go of my parents’ hands. However, a few years into Bethany and the school worked its magic on me, like it works on every single student who is a part of the family.
All my memories and experiences couldn’t have ever been complete without the people who were such an integral part of them, and who made every great memory what it is – The Bethany Teachers. All the way from Pre – Nursery, to Junior College, every teacher has been supremely supportive and influential. It is so inspiring for me to remember the commitment and happiness with which my teachers instilled the strongest values in us and enthusiastically led us unto enjoying both our academics and extra-curriculars with equal zeal.
One of the fondest and most treasured gifts that Bethany has given me is the Love for Music!
I learnt how much positivity and strength music can bring in people. In fact, one of my favourite experiences is standing together with all my friends and teachers in the auditorium and singing songs that instil faith and hope. Taking part in the class assemblies, music events and the most exciting musicals, started developing a deep-rooted confidence in me. But most of all, I enjoyed what I was doing. I continue to learn Music and thoroughly enjoy every second of it.
Looking back, I find that Bethany created a beautiful balance in my life, a balance between my academics and my hobbies.
Taking part in all the extra-curriculars in school, helped me focus on my studies and studies helped me enjoy my hobbies. There was such a perfect balance between the two, that I started loving and enjoying studying and singing and working hard to do both to the best of my ability, without even realizing it.
There’s another magical aspect to Bethany, which is – when you meet a person you’ve never met before and discover that he too is a Bethanite, it’s like the Universe comes together to make that experience so memorable!
“Oh you are from Bethany?! Me too!” And the conversation that follows flows like a stream, pure in its manner and clear in its direction.
I guess it’s an invisible thread that binds us all together even after we’ve left school. A thread that will hold you strong in the hardest of times, a thread that will show you the right way, the thread of trust, faith, hope and strength. A thread, that will never break…

13 long years have flown in a jiffy !! As I write this, all the great time that I have had at Bethany come to my mind. I still remember my first day at the pre-primary school when I was a little boy, teary eyed and reluctant to leave my parents. But ever since, I have always considered Bethany as a fun place to be at where studies and extra-curricular activities go hand-in-hand. All the sports days, carnivals, musicals, road-runs, the exciting trip to Wayanad …. all played a vital role in making school life so exciting along with studies.
And soon, it was time to bid adieu to school life. After the grand Valedictory function, it was time for the ICSE board exams at Bethany for Class X. There was lots to study, remember and be prepared for. It was the first board exam and there were moments of anxiety and uncertainty. By God’s grace, my hard work paid off ! I could make it to the top of the pile.
I wish to thank my parents and teachers for their continuous support and encouragement all along. There was absolutely no pressure from their side which enabled me to stay focused and do well. Constant revisions and taking every school exam seriously helped a lot. I consciously logged out of my Instagram account a month before the board exams began. However, I was connected with my friends through WhatsApp which enabled all of us to discuss and share notes and also clear doubts. I was very lucky to have been in a batch full of friends who helped each other with notes and cleared each other’s doubts without any hitch.
Preparation for board exams never happens suddenly, it needs a continuous effort. I never believed in competing with others. Competition was to out-perform myself. I worked hard meticulously, remained focused to perform better. If I need to remain focused, I need to de-stress as well. For me, de-stressing means playing cricket and listening to music. Even during the board exams, I made it a point to go out and play cricket for at least an hour in order to refresh myself. I firmly believe studies and relaxation should go hand-in-hand. This is something which I take away with me from my precious years at Bethany.
I take this opportunity to thank Team Bethany for providing all the support and direction during my stint. A special mention goes to my Principal, Robert Sir and my Director, Akash Sir for making Bethany a great environment to be in.

ICSE Topper (Bethany)

Discipline, hard work, perseverance and dedication has helped Neysa Cariappa in her pursuit to excel in competitive badminton. Neysa, who turns 14 years in December, was introduced to Badminton at the age of 8 years as a fitness activity. After a year of training under Mr. B.N. Sudharkar, she started playing state ranking and school tournaments for fun. Soon, she stepped into the world of active badminton with a lot of passion and started playing National and State Ranking tournaments. Since, the last three years she has been representing Karnataka State at the National Championship. Neysa Cariappa has been the top seed in Under 10 Girls Singles, Under 13 Girls Singles and presently in Under 15 Girls Singles in Karnataka State. Though Doubles is not her favourite choice but has been playing and has won couple of matches in the recent past, with her doubles Partner, Ashitha Singh of DPS.
Neysa is a proud student of Bethany High studying in 8th grade. This month Neysa along with four other girls from different ICSE Schools represented Karnataka State at the CISCE School Sports and Games – National Badminton Selection tournament, held at Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence, Bangalore and won the Under 17 Girls team event. She also participated and won Singles and Doubles events in Under 17 Girls. She has been selected to participate at the School Games Federation of India to be held at Chindawada District in Madhya Pradesh next month.
It’s not just badminton she pursues with passion and hard work but also academics. Neysa has tried to balance both badminton and studies. Her day starts as early as 5 a.m., when she leaves to Kanteerava Stadium for fitness under the watchful eyes of her fitness coach, Mr. V.R.Beedu, a Dronacharya awardee. Mr. Beedu has trained many international athletes such as Anup Sridhar, Aparna Popat, Parupalli Kashyap and Reeth Abraham. She trains for two hours for endurance including strengthening and conditioning. Post fitness she barely has half an hour to get ready for school.
After school, she heads straight for her training session with her coaches, Mr. Irshad Khan and Mr. Prakash Rathod at Koramangala Club, which ends at 5 p.m. She enjoys her training as she does different kinds of training every day which makes it interesting. After the session, she gets an hour or so to complete her homework. The next session starts at 6.15 p.m. and goes on till 7.30 p.m. She returns home with barely any time or energy for any activity except to call it a day!! On Saturdays, she trains with Mr. B.N. Sudhakar at Kanteerava Indoor Stadium. On Sundays, Neysa tries to complete all the studies and pending class work, which she has missed due to her participation at the tournaments. She travels a lot as she has been playing all the State and National Raking Tournaments this year.
Neysa is grateful to her badminton coaches, Mr. B.N. Sudhakar, Mr. Irshad Khan and Mr. Prakash Rathod and fitness instructor, Mr. V.R.Beedu without whom she would not have reached this far. She believes that under their guidance and encouragement, she’ll reach greater heights.
To Neysa Cariappa, Bethany High has been her second home, where she likes to take part in all the school activities and to de-stress and chill out with friends before her gruelling sessions (of course, no complains). She’s able to balance her studies as well as sports because of the support, encouragement and motivation from her Principal, Mr. Robert Khin and Director, Mr. Akash Ryall, HOD, Mallika ma’am and all her teachers. All her teachers have been accommodative whenever she has missed school. She is ever grateful to her friends and all her classmates, (in the past years too) who has shared all the class work and helped her cope with studies.

“Taran Williams was the only child who cried at his 1st std interview, clinging to his dad throughout. Yet, 10 years later, he has graduated with distinction in academics and sports, earning an admission to the reputed Barca Residency Academy for youth soccer in Casa Grande, USA.
This transformation took place at Bethany High. The school provides many opportunities for a child’s holistic progress, and Taran quickly grew in confidence along with his classmates. He joined the athletic and football teams, and was able to balance these with his academics under his teacher’s watchful care. Being former sportspersons themselves, his parents were so happy with that balance. Often, he and his teammates would rush off from class to a sports event and return later to teachers who welcomed them but also made them do their homework.
The school’s spiritual atmosphere cultivated by Akash sir and Robert sir connected the classroom and sports field to the chapel. Without this critical link, Taran Williams would not be the person he is today. To excel under God is a blessing and it helps students grow into their potential as successful and responsible citizens. Today, if Taran Williams sheds a tear, it won’t be because he’s afraid, but because he misses his Bethany family, with its classes and carnivals, track-field and fist-bumps, chapel and canteen. With your wishes, he wants to “march boldly onward . . . trusting God and doing the right.”
