Eva’s Journey: From Tragedy to Triumph at Bethany High School

Eva’s Journey: From Tragedy to Triumph at Bethany High School

Life often throws unexpected challenges that test the human spirit, and some individuals rise above them with extraordinary courage. Eva’s journey from tragedy to triumph is a testament to her resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of her family, community, and workplace.

On 12th September 2019, Eva’s life took a tragic turn. Returning home from college after dropping off a friend, she met with a horrific road accident just 50 metres from her house. In an attempt to avoid a pothole, her vehicle collided with a tractor, resulting in devastating injuries. Her left arm and the side of her face were crushed, and she suffered extensive brain injuries, a broken jaw, and damage to her optic nerve, leaving her with blurred vision. Despite the severity of her condition, a Good Samaritan rushed her to a hospital, where her battle for survival began.

Eva endured months of surgeries, critical care, and intense rehabilitation, which included relearning how to walk, speak, and adapt to the loss of her dominant hand. The physical pain was compounded by the emotional toll of adjusting to her altered appearance. The road to recovery was slow and fraught with uncertainty, but Eva and her family held on to faith and determination.

In December 2019, after three gruelling months in hospitals, Eva was discharged. However, returning to a semblance of normalcy was not immediate. Her attempt to reintegrate into college life was heartbreaking, as she struggled to cope with her limitations and the emotional aftermath of the accident.

It was during this challenging period that Bethany High School offered her a lifeline. The school leadership, recognising her potential, welcomed her into their community with open arms. She began her journey as a librarian and teacher at the Bethany Primary Department, working with young students to develop reading skills and vocabulary. This opportunity not only provided her with a renewed sense of purpose but also played a pivotal role in restoring her confidence and independence.

Eva’s story has inspired many and was recently featured in The Times of India. In the article, she candidly reflected on her physical and emotional recovery, sharing insights into the struggles she faced and the triumphs she achieved. The report highlighted her transition from a survivor to an educator who now shapes young minds and instils the joy of learning in her students.

At Bethany High School, Eva found more than just employment. The warmth and support extended by the school’s leadership, staff, and students created an environment where she could heal, grow, and thrive. Her colleagues showed extraordinary sensitivity to her limitations, helping her regain belief in her capabilities.

Eva’s journey serves as a reminder of the strength inherent in the human spirit and the profound impact of a nurturing community. It exemplifies how resilience, faith, and collective support can transform lives, turning personal tragedy into a story of hope and inspiration.

Her story stands as a testament to the values of inclusion and care upheld by Bethany High School, and it continues to inspire all who have the privilege of hearing it.

Bethany High celebrates Kannada Rajyotsav

Bethany High celebrates Kannada Rajyotsav

As is the tradition, the Kannada Rajyotsava programme was celebrated by the High School department of Bethany High on 6th November, 2024 with a lot of fervour. Through this programme, the students showcased respect for our country and the Kannada language in particular.
The programme started with a prayer. They showed the efforts of Aluru Venkatarayar in the unification of Karnataka .
The students spoke about how the ‘Mysore State’ came into being with the contribution of gentlemen like Deshpande, Rodda Srinivasa Rao, Chenna Basappa. Later, during the rule of Devaraja Arasu, as per the wishes of the people, ‘Mysore State’ was renamed as ‘Karnataka State’.
Through the skit, the story of ‘Onake Obavva’, who was the wife of the court guard of Madakari Nayak of Chitradurga Sansadhana and her brave act of facing HyderAli’s army, was enacted. It illustrated her self-confidence, courage, bravery and  devotion to the king. Though she was an ordinary housewife, she sacrificed her life safeguarding the state from the intruders.
The Kannada Rajyotsava programme was well appreciated and enkindled pride and honour among the students and staff for our state, “Karnataka” helping them to understand the rich history and culture in which we live in.

Fighting FOMO in a Digital World: Insights from A Prathik of Class IX

Fighting FOMO in a Digital World: Insights from A Prathik of Class IX

It is easy to feel left behind in today’s booming digital landscape. The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a growing concern, especially among students and the younger generation. With constant connectivity through social media and the allure of digital platforms, children and youths alike are increasingly distracted by the pressure to stay updated, stay relevant, and stay online. The challenge lies not just in navigating these distractions, but in realising that missing out on certain moments or updates might not be such a bad thing after all.

FOMO, is a psychological response to the fear of being excluded or missing out on experiences, conversations, or updates that others seem to be enjoying. For students, this can lead to an unhealthy dependency on mobile phones, spending long hours scrolling through feeds or watching videos to ensure they are “in the know.” The constant distraction can take a toll on academic performance, mental health, and even relationships.

At Bethany High, we understand that addressing these modern-day challenges is crucial for our students’ overall well-being. The recent campaign by The Times of India, “In with the News, Out with the Noise,” provided a platform for students across the country to express their thoughts on this pressing issue. We are proud to highlight one of our very own students, A Prathik from Class IX, Bethany High Sarjapur, who emerged as one of the top five All India winners for his entry titled “Fight the FOMO.”

In his entry, Prathik shares his personal experience with digital distractions and offers thoughtful advice on how to manage them. He acknowledges how tempting it can be to constantly check one’s phone, even during study hours, and how it negatively affects his academic performance. His honesty and self-reflection resonate with many students who face similar struggles today.

Prathik offers a mature perspective on how to deal with FOMO effectively. He suggests acknowledging that everyone is online, and that missing out on updates or trends will not have lasting negative consequences. Instead, he encourages students to take time offline and focus on personal growth and productivity. By giving the mind a break, we can overcome the anxiety of missing out and embrace the benefits of being present in the moment.

His words reflect a deeper understanding of the digital challenges students face and the importance of self-awareness in navigating them. Prathik’s entry serves as a reminder that we are not slaves to our screens. We can take charge of our time, reduce distractions, and create healthier digital habits.

At Bethany High, we strive to empower our students to think critically about the world around them, including the impact of technology on their lives. Prathik’s achievement is a testament to the thoughtful and insightful voices emerging from Bethany High. By highlighting Prathik’s thought provoking entry, we hope to inspire more students to reflect on their digital habits and take proactive steps toward overcoming distractions. Let’s work together to combat FOMO and embrace a healthier balance in this digital age.

“FIGHT THE FOMO” by A Prathik, Class IX, Bethany High Sarjapur

“We have been discussing digital distractions at school for a while now. We even had a school assembly on this topic, where most students talked about how to tackle this problem. As a student, I spend a lot of time on my phone, and I am constantly checking it even when I should not be using it. I need to keep my phone with me while studying, and this has affected my academics. If I wereFight the FOMO younger, I think I might have been tempted to keep checking the phone and staying on devices, which can have a negative impact on the mind.

As far as dealing with FOMO is concerned, it needs to be dealt with swiftly. Acknowledge that everyone is online all the time, but missing out on small moments or updates won’t harm you in the long run. Use this time offline to focus on something more productive or growth-oriented. Reassure yourself that you are really not missing out on much when you give your mind a break. This will help reduce the fear of missing out. To break out of FOMO, start by recognising when you’re feeling it. Ask yourself, ‘Am I really missing out, or does it just seem that way?'”
